From Your First Breath to Your Last
I was there the day you entered this world,
So tiny, so precious, so new.
I watched you take your very first breath,
Never knowing all we’d journey through.
Eight little weeks were all it took
Before another heart became your home.
Uncle Grant loved you with all he had,
And with him, you were never alone.
You weren’t simply a dog to him,
You were family, companion, and friend.
And I know the love you shared together
Was a love that could never truly end.
Then came the day we lost Uncle Grant,
And somehow you found your way back to me.
Maybe life knew we needed each other,
Maybe that’s just how it was meant to be.
Having you home was something special—
A piece of him still here somehow.
A familiar soul, a connection to someone
We both had to live without.
And Clyde, how you loved the simple things,
Especially your favorite treat—
A peanut butter sandwich made your whole day,
And watching you enjoy one was just as sweet.
Today, my heart had to do something
I never wanted it to do.
I sat beside you one final time,
And whispered my love to you.
The little puppy whose first breath I witnessed
Was now tired and ready to rest.
So I stayed beside you through your final breath,
Because you deserved nothing less.
From June twenty-seventh, twenty-seventeen,
Until September seventeenth, twenty-twenty-six,
There were nine beautiful years between two breaths—
Filled with memories time can never erase.
Your life began right there beside me,
And somehow it ended there too.
What an honor it was, my sweet Clyde,
To have been chosen to walk this life with you.
And somewhere beyond what I can see,
I hope Uncle Grant was waiting there—
Calling your name like he used to do,
With open arms and love to spare.
I hope you ran straight into his arms,
Your young legs strong once more.
And maybe he had a peanut butter sandwich
Waiting for you at Heaven’s door.
So this isn’t goodbye forever, Clyde,
Though today my heart is torn apart.
Because death can take you from my arms,
But it can never take you from my heart.
You came into this world surrounded by love,
And you left it surrounded by love too.
I was there for your first breath.
I was there for your last.
And I will love you through every tomorrow
Just as fiercely as I loved you in the past.
Run free with Uncle Grant, sweet boy.
Eat all the peanut butter sandwiches you want.
Until the day I find you both again,
Keep a place beside you just for me.
